The Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, will today confirm that he is going to ensure that the UK’s construction industry will drive the nation’s economic recovery as things return to ‘normal’ following the Covid-19 lockdown.
Boris Johnson likened his government’s plan to US president Franklin D Roosevelt’s New Deal programme in the 1930, which used public works construction to get America over the great depression of the 1920s. In a speech today in the West Midlands, the prime minister will speak of his commitment to ‘build, build, build’ to fuel economic recovery across the UK. In extracts released by Downing Street ahead of the event, he is quoted as saying: “It sounds positively Rooseveltian. It sounds like a New Deal. All I can say is that if so, then that is how it is meant to sound and to be, because that is what the times demand. A government that is powerful and determined and that puts its arms around people at a time of crisis. This is a government that is wholly committed not just to defeating coronavirus but to using this crisis finally to tackle this country’s great unresolved challenges of the last three decades. “To build the homes, to fix the NHS, to tackle the skills crisis, to mend the indefensible gap in opportunity and productivity and connectivity between the regions of the UK. To unite and level up. To that end we will build, build, build. Build back better, build back greener, build back faster and to do that at the pace that this moment requires.” The prime minister will say that £5bn of capital investment projects is being brought forward in England, including: • £1.5bn this year for hospital maintenance and expansion • £100m this year for 29 projects in the road network, plus £10m for development work to unblock the Manchester rail bottleneck, which will begin this year New Dash-5 Kubota’s Look a Class Act
“We were due to witness the European launch of these new Kubota mini excavators at an event in Spain earlier this year, sadly the spectre of the Covid-19 virus put paid to that idea, as such I have not seen one in the metal as yet, but I must say, I’m looking forward to it as they do look very nice indeed!” Quote and original article are Copyright Nick Drew/Earthmovers Magazine. The telehandler is a standard piece of equipment for any building site, and it is difficult to imagine a site operating without one. However, in recent years, a new type of telehandler has become commonplace on many construction sites. This new, rotary-telehandler offers significantly more features and modes of use, often resulting in reduced need for specialist machines, such as the mobile crane. Is the rotary telehandler machine becoming as indispensable as the standard telehandler? Manitou claim to be the UK market leader in rotary telehandlers. Construction Plant News spoke to Mark Ormond, Managing Director of Manitou UK, to find why how customers are benefiting from these machines. “The main reason customers purchase an MRT (Manitou Rotary Telehandler) is because of its flexibility. This one machine can move pallets around a site, be fitted with a jib or winch and used as a crane or operate as an access platform. That flexibility has the potential to save users an enormous amount of time and money”. Manitou MRTs range from 14 – 32m lift height with lift capacities of up to 7,000kg. Four-wheel steer, 360-degree rotation, and the option of a remote control enable the machines to work in a wide range of situations. There are a wide range of attachments and, to ensure safe operation at all times, an attachment recognition system will automatically adjust the load capacity of the base machine to the characteristics of the attachment being used. This ensures the operator can never accidentally overload the machine due to the attachment being used. Copyright owned by CPN. Described by Kubota as the most environmentally friendly excavator in its class, the new KX042-4α is an update to the existing KX042-4 model, with improvements that reduce emissions and enhance operator comfort. It is available across Europe. The new KX042-4α mini excavator from Kubota comes complete with a Stage-V compliant engine, meaning lower emissions and increased sustainability of the machine. The machine comes fully Stage-V compliant. It incorporates an updated DPF system that has both a Particulate Filter and Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC), and now enables increased intervals between regeneration and longer service life, according to Kubota. Aside from ensuring cleaner exhaust emissions, the improved DPF system was said to reduce maintenance by increasing the service intervals for both the regeneration filter and ash cleaner. The new model has an updated DPF system and the auto idling system on the KX042-4α helps to save fuel. When the control levers are in neutral for more than 4 seconds, the engine rpm automatically idles. Then, when any of the control levers are moved, the engine rpm immediately returns. This feature reduces both noise and exhaust emissions, making the updated machine particularly suitable for urban environments. Other enhancements include a suspension seat, designed to keep users comfortable for longer. The machine also comes with a spacious cab that has a wide entrance.
Glen Hampson, Business Development Manager for Construction at Kubota UK, said, “Our focus at Kubota is to help our customers overcome many of the barriers they face in today’s complicated industry. The KX042-4α will do just this, with a powerful and reliable engine and the versatility you need for every job on the worksite. What is more, the Stage-V compliant engine and improved DPF will reduce emissions and increase the overall sustainability of the machine, which is a key priority across the industry.” Oliver Curran Construction, a groundworks and civil engineering business working out of South Ruislip, West London, has just taken delivery of the first brand new Kubota KX060-5 sold in Europe. The new machine was supplied by Tring based Boss Plant Sales, the Kubota dealer for London, the South, and South East England, replaces a 5-year-old Kubota KX057 and joins a fleet of 8 Kubota mini-excavators run by Oliver Curran Construction.
Commenting, during hand-over in Boss Plant’s yard in Tring, Michael Kelly, Oliver Curran Construction’s Construction Director said,” We’ve run Kubota mini-excavators for over 15 years, and we wouldn’t consider anything else. They are both reliable and economic to run, and they maintain a high residual value, even after 4- or 5-years hard use. Our operators know the machines inside and out and they are both safe and comfortable using them.” The KX060-5 features a conventional tail swing, which can be used in different and more demanding applications than the U-series. For instance, it is the machine most suitable for heavier attachments due to the offset of the counterweight. The KX060-5 is equipped with a full-colour, high-resolutions 7-inch LCD screen and jog-dial navigation as standard, to give operators better access to machine information. They also all have a high-visibility orange seatbelt and alert functions to encourage the operator to wear the seatbelt. Noise levels inside the cab have been reduced by 5dB to 74dB. The KX060-5 is powered by a Kubota Original Direct Injection Engine with common rail system (CSR) and a diesel particulate filter (DPF) muffler, which meets Stage V emissions legislation. The new DPF helps to reduce maintenance requirements by increasing the service intervals for both the regeneration filter and the ash cleaner. When maintenance is required it is now more convenient due to better access, offered by the wider opening bonnets. Kubota has announced the launch of the KX042-4α excavator, an update to the existing KX042-4 model. The machine has been designed to be more sustainable and is now the most environmentally friendly excavator in its class. The launch of the updated excavator comes at a time when the construction sector is under increasing pressure to become more sustainable, with statistics showing that approximately 39 per cent of the world’s carbon emissions are a result of building and construction. The machine comes fully Stage-V compliant and incorporates an updated Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) which incorporates both the Particulate Filter and Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) and now enables increased intervals between regeneration and longer service life. The improved DPF system also ensures clean exhaust emissions and reduces maintenance by increasing the service intervals for both the regeneration filter and ash cleaner. Using an auto idling system, the KX042-4α helps the users save fuel. When the control levers are in neutral for more than 4 seconds, the engine RPM automatically idles. When any control lever is moved, the engine RPM immediately returns. This innovative feature reduces noise and exhaust emissions while reducing operating costs, making the updated machine an ideal choice for jobs in built-up urban environment. The KX042-4α also has the power and versatility to handle the toughest jobs with ease and efficiency, thanks to digging and lifting performance, AUX oil flow with proportional flow control, auto-shift and float position – making ground-finishing work fast and easy.
Other enhancements include a deluxe suspension seat, designed and engineered to fit better and keep users working for longer comfortably and reducing strain. It also comes with a spacious cab and wide entrance, developed again to optimise operator comfort and give generous legroom to minimise fatigue. Those using the excavator are also able to leave the machine with ease.
